Laocoon statue near Archaeological Museum (Archeological Museum)

In front of the building of Archeological Museum there stands a statue of Laocoon, a copy of the sculptural work by Hagesandros now housed in Vatican. It was gifted to Odessa a hundred years ago.

The subject of the sculpture is a story from the Ancient Greek myth about the fall of Troy. The priest Laocoon and his 2 sons battle with snakes, who according to the legend kill them in the end. Torment is reflected on Laocoon's face; horror and despair - in the stance and gestures of his sons.

There are those who think that the Odessan Laocoon has far greater torments to bear than Vatican cousin. Because he is under attack not only from the mythological snakes, but also from real-life hooligans, who have, instituted a tradition of removing his fingers, hands and all other protruding parts of his body.
